Jessica Selected as Outstanding Fourth

Grader at RemingtonElementary School

“Why can’t we just get along?”  is a question often asked by this introspective young student.  Tuesday, February 13th was the evening when her classmates and their families learned more about Jessica  when she received the Outstanding Fourth Grader award at Remington Elementary School.  The Northwest Denver Optimist Club sponsors the award.  Teacher Bernadette Nieto spoke to the crowd explaining, “Jessica is a student who endeavors to do her absolute best in all academics.  She will do her best to help others to understand assignments.  She is not afraid to speak up and ask questions that will help her clear up any confusion.  Her positive attitude and her encouragement to her fellow classmates are appreciated.  Jessica is a peacemaker.  She is well deserving of this honor.”

Jessica began her education in Remington’s ECE program and her experiences have led her to think about teaching in the future.  “I feel I want to be a teacher to help kids learn what I have learned.  I love to dance, draw and write.  I’ve written several poems for the performance for tonight.  I titled them Wide Awake and Blizzard.  Ms. Hurst (the music teacher) and Mrs. Nieto have inspired me.  Ms. Hurst makes music fun and she seems to really like teaching.  Mrs. Nieto takes an interest in all the students and she pushes me in math.  She always asks me to partner with kids.  I guess I’m already learning what it is like to teach.”

The fourth graders gave a stirring performance after dinner and the awards ceremony.  The theme for the evening’s entertainment was “My Town, My World” and encompassed the thought of creating a community of caring citizens.  The students integrated story telling and acting, poetry, singing and dancing, and for the finale, rapping and dancing.  Jessica could be found performing in almost all the acts.  Besides her artistic bent, she is learning to become a golfer through Open Fairways, a new program sponsored by the Northwest Denver Optimist Club in partnership with Open Fairways.  The program is open to fourth and fifth grade students.  Open Fairways furnishes all the equipment and the instructors.  The Optimists furnish the encouragement.  According to Richard Jimenez, Optimist coordinator for the program, Jessica is one of the better golfers.  One has to ask what else can this talented fourth grader do.

Last night was the second clinic sponsored by your Optimist Club and Open Fairways at Remington for 4th and 5th graders.  Kids, golfers and families were having so much fun and the kids are learning to focus and keep their eyes on the ball.  Below are several photos I hope you enjoy.  If this looks like something you would like to help with, please call Richard Jimenez at 303-420-3836 for more information.  Thanks.
